For eight weeks, middle and high school musicians across central Ohio have met to develop their skills as jazz musicians in our Columbus Youth Jazz Lab. Come out and see our flagship youth jazz ensemble, the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra (CYJO), under the direction of Mark Donavan, open for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra on their Sunday matinee. The orchestra’s talented high school musicians further their experience in America’s classical music through a 30-week session during the school year and performances at the Southern Theatre and beyond.
The CCJB is a legacy ensemble held in the fall, spring and summer in the Jazz Academy directed by Jess Sneeringer. Consisting of community members from all occupations and backgrounds, the CCJB is a welcoming environment that performs in a variety of venues each season such as Natalie's - Grandview, JazZoo and more. An active multi-style drummer, Jerry Powell is one of the most sought-after drummers in the Columbus and Detroit music scenes. In addition to performance, he is an active percussion educator in central Ohio.
