1983 – 1984 Season

The Jazz Arts Group’s 1983-1984 concert series “Big Band 80’s Guest Artist series” began with an opening concert celebrating the music of Richard Rodgers which featured Mary McClendon, Jeanette Williams, Bobby Pierce, and Michele Horsefield. Other season guests included Ralph Towner, Clark Terry, Jan Rosemond, Hank Marr, Eddie Daniels, and Rusty Bryant. The season concluded with JAG’s Fourth Annual Salute to Kenton, featuring John Von Ohlen and Michele Horsefield.

 

RICHARD RODGERS ROARS

Big Band 80’s Guest Artist Series
November 6, 1983 | Battelle Auditorium

This was an evening of exciting Big Band Sound featuring the music of Richard Rodgers and his two principle collaborators—Hart and Hammerstein. You heard great renditions of such hits as “Lady is a Tramp,” “Thou Swell,” and a new concert version of “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.” It featured the vocal stylings of Mary McClendon, Jeanette Williams, Bobby Pierce, and Michele Horsefield. This was an evening of American music not soon forgotten. Program selections were announced from the stage.

Guitarist Ralph Towner was one of the day’s greatest contemporary artists. His recordings with the Paul Winter Consort and with the gold-selling group-Oregon marked him as an artist you wanted to hear. Program selections were announced from the stage.

Clark Terry always provided an exciting evening of jazz and entertainment. Flutist Jan Rosemond returned to her hometown as Clark’s special guest and Hank Marr took up the organ for a special treat. Program selections were announced from the stage.

EDDIE DANIELS

Woodwind giant Eddie Daniels joined forces with resident genius Rusty Bryant and our own saxophone crew. Daniels was a veteran of the great Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra of the 60’s and was THE greatest multiple woodwind player of the day. Program selections were announced from the stage.

FOURTH ANNUAL SALUTE TO STAN KENTON 

Featuring John Von Ohlen and Michele Horsefield

John Von Ohlen was a musician of unconventional philosophy. John had a four year stint with the Kenton Orchestra, and then returned to his roots in Southern Indiana. Michele Horsefield established a reputation as the finest vocal coach for professional singers in Central Ohio. She also actively worked with the Tom Carroll Quartet. We were excited to welcome both John and Michele to Battelle Auditorium for an amazing night of Kenton’s music.
