1982 – 1983 Season

The Jazz Arts Group’s 1982-1983 concert series “Big Band 80’s Guest Artist Series” began with an opening concert celebrating the music of Richard Rodgers, featuring Mary McClendon, Bobby Pierce, Bobby Alston, Jeanette Williams, and Michele Horsefield. Al Cohn, Joe Williams, and Ed Shaughnessey joined JAG throughout the season. Marvin Stamm and Michele Horsefield once again joined JAG for the Third Annual Salute to Kenton.

This was our most exciting opener ever! You heard music from “Porgy and Bess,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” and “American in Paris,” plus great standards such as “Fascinatin’ Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” “You Go To My Head,” and much more. Program selections were announced from the stage.

One of the great big band singers of all time, Joe made his mark with the great Count Basie and in later years he became one of America’s favorite cabaret singers with frequent appearances on The Tonight Show, Public Television, and the special, Kennedy Center Alive. The Tonight Show drummer Ed Shaughnessy brought his awesome technique and exciting music to town for a slam-bang evening of percussion sounds. Ed led one of the West Coast’s most exciting bands and you saw and heard why he is one of the greatest drummers in music. Program selections were announced from the stage.
