All That Jazz 4th Grade Curriculum

The 18-piece Columbus Jazz Orchestra introduces the magic of jazz in a concert tailored especially for 4th and 5th grade students. The CJO will play big band jazz standards and demonstrate elements of jazz in a lively and interactive concert. The historic Southern Theatre serves as the perfect venue for this special performance, giving students a unique concert experience like no other! Our goal is to serve over 5,000 4th grade students in the Columbus metropolitan area with this program as they prepare to choose their own musical instrument in the coming years. 

Prior to the concert, each teacher will receive interactive curriculum materials, including slides, videos, and audio recordings. Topics will include:

  • Birth of Jazz
  • The Blues
  • Improvisation
  • Swing
  • The Jazz Orchestra
  • Bebop and Latin Jazz

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

For districts outside of Columbus City Schools: please contact Education and Outreach Coordinator Savannah Gonsoulin at sgonsoulin@jazzartsgroup.org for information on pricing, curriculum, and scheduling for our October 13th concert at the Southern Theatre.

Step 1: Complete the All That Jazz Curriculum form to receive the online lessons.
Step 2: Secure written approval from your school administrator to attend an All That Jazz Concert, then forward approval to UnifiedArts@columbus.k12.oh.us. 
  • Concert Dates (scheduled on a first-come-first served basis, considering special requests): 
    • November 30, 10:15am and 12:15pm
    • December 1, 10:15am and 12:15pm
    • February 8, 10:15am
    • February 9, 10:15am and 12:15pm 

 

*Your preferred date/time is not guaranteed. However, every effort will be made to accommodate date/time requests* 

 

Step 3: Complete the All That Jazz Field Trip Registration form

 

*You MUST have approval from your school administrator to complete this step. Scheduling cannot occur without this form*

Step 4: You and your school administrator will receive an email confirmation from Dr. Hill confirming your scheduled date/time and communicating necessary day-of-event information.
