1977 – 1978 Season

The Jazz Arts Group’s 1977-1978 concert series began with an opening concert featuring the fabulous Ladd McIntosh, back for his fifth appearance with JAG. Other artists featured throughout the season included Frank Foster, Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, Phil Woods, and ended with a concert featuring west coast saxophonist Tom Scott.

 

LADD McINTOSH

September 25, 1977 | Battelle Auditorium

This former Columbusite returned for his 5th JAG concert. This was an exciting evening of jazz standards and Ladd’s own original work. Ladd received critical raves for his innovative work. Program selections were announced from the stage.

FRANK FOSTER

November 12, 1977 | Walnut Ridge High School Auditorium

Frank was one of the great tenor sidemen in the history of Jazz. Formerly with Count Basie, he played with so many greats that it is impossible to list them all but a few include Elvin Jones, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Woody Herman, and Donald Byrd. He became a leader in his own right and his band made big waves in New York. The concert featured some of Frank’s own music plus his fantastic tenor playing. This was his second appearance with the Arts Group. Program selections were announced from the stage.

CLARK TERRY

December 4, 1977 | Northland High School Auditorium

Clark Terry was the trumpet players’ trumpeter and one of “Jazzdom’s” all-time Greats! He returned to Columbus for an appearance with “one of my very favorite bands, the Jazz Arts Group.” Clark made big music in the revived Jazz scene and his Big Bad Band had three Big Selling Albums. This was a super evening of great trumpet playing and marvelous Big Band Sounds. Program selections were announced from the stage.

BILL WATROUS

January 15, 1978 | Upper Arlington High School Auditorium

Called by many “The World’s Greatest Trombonist,” Bill Watrous led his own band, Manhattan Wildlife Refuge, and was one of the busiest session players on the West Coast. If you’d heard him before, you’d want to again, and if by chance you hadn’t heard him, you wouldn’t want to miss this chance. This was a great evening of big band jazz with our own JAG. PHIL WOODS

March 5, 1978 | Battelle Auditorium

Phil Woods was the musician’s musician and the people’s choice as the greatest alto saxophonist on the day’s contemporary music scene. Rarely does any on man sit atop any music category the way this man did. He won both the Down Beat Critics and Readers Polls. He also won several Grammys in collaboration with Michael LeGrand. TOM SCOTT

May 12, 1978 | Upper Arlington High School Auditorium

This concert featured the outstanding west coast woodwind virtuoso, composer-arranger. Tom wrote and toured with Joni Mitchell, Barbara Streisand, Carole King, John Lennon, Gerry Mulligan, and Pat Williams, to name a few. Scott was one of our most popular performers in the past; you didn’t want to miss this one! Program selections were announced from the stage.
