1992 – 1993 Season

In 1992, Jazz Arts Group celebrated its 20th anniversary with a myriad of guest artists at the Battelle Auditorium including Terry Gibbs, Maynard Ferguson, James Moody, Harold Jones and Norris Turney, and Anita O’Day. At the Palace Theatre the band featured Frankie Laine, Rosemary Clooney, Helen Forrest and Buddy DeFranco. JAG traditions including “The Count and the Duke” and the Kenton tribute return as well.

Only a handful of performers have demonstrated the lasting appeal to weather fads and trends over the years. With the 1947 recording of That’s My Desire to the 1970’s hit You Gave Me a Mountain, Frankie Laine has been such an artist. His gold record hits include Mule Train, That Lucky Old Sun, Jezebel, and I Believe, plus film hits High Noon, In The Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, and TV’s Rawhide. You heard many more favorites! Grammy Award winner and vibist extraordinaire Terry Gibbs joined JAG for our 20th anniversary opener. He led the finest band of the 50’s and fronted JAG for our ’88 season opener. A legend, bona fide and unqualified. Woodwind virtuoso James Moody joined us for a MID-WINTER JAZZ BONANZA. In the late 40’s Moody made his reputation as a sideman with Dizzy Gillespie. He had been a world traveler ever since, frequently reuniting with Gillespie for international tours. This was his first appearance in Columbus in almost 20 years.
