Making Choices

making-choices-1Making Choices (in the middle school bandroom) is a residency program for middle school students, requested by school administrators but designed and delivered by five professional, globetrotting musicians who are proven as effective teaching artists.

The framework of this program allows for appropriate planning and assessment plus multiple visits during the school day band period.  It provides opportunities for musicians to contribute and interact personally with the teachers and the students.

The musicians, led by drummer Reggie Jackson, offer a side-by-side opportunity for band students and their director to play, improvise and develop individual perspectives within the structure and roots of the blues.  Each student is encouraged to understand the blues as an option while making creative decisions and exploring the possibilities music has to offer, both in and outside of the school environment.

“I wanted middle school students to have the opportunity for an in-depth jazz experience that included improvisation.  I also wanted them to hear jazz played by quality musicians and to have the chance to have conversations with them so that they could learn something about their musical journeys.”
