You’re A Lot Like Me
We introduced the teachers at a central Ohio arts impact elementary school to a local composer/musician who had written a song about folks believing in one another. Seems like a simple concept, but these teachers saw it as a needed opportunity. The teachers immediately envisioned the fourth grade class recording the song and using the text to address their social studies curriculum. They described the class as a group of students who they felt could be better leaders in the fifth grade if they had a positive influence on their recognition of the importance of “community.”
In the end, the students did learn the music, recorded it in the high school recording studio and performed it at the Fifth Grade Graduation. The composer, Rev. T.S. Carpenter, not only worked with the students on the recording, but was the commencement speaker for the graduation ceremony.
