Bob Breithaupt’s Blog: A Great Month at Jazz Arts Group

15 October 2010 One Comment

Bob BreithauptA month in most performing arts organizations is generally marked by one or maybe two, notable events. With all the activities now generated through the Jazz Arts Group – the CJO concerts, community-based events as a part of the Jazz Academy programs and those in the schools, the list seems to grow all the time. From early this month through next, you’ll see what we’re doing that makes JAG connect with central Ohio – all within thirty days from early October to early November.

We are unveiling our newest group of young artists – those kids who are a part of our growing youth jazz programs – nearly 70 talented musicians from across the region. This month we begin a new program, with the cooperation of the Godman Guild and with support of JP Morgan Chase, to assist a group of young people from the Weinland Park neighborhood to further their musical talents through becoming Jazz Academy “fellows” by working with local mentors.

Columbus favorite, trombonist/composer Wycliffe Gordon, will perform with the East High School Marching band in a new composition that will be a part of Beyond the Blackberry Patch, to be premièred by an ensemble of ten of Columbus’ finest professional musicians in early 2012 at the Lincoln Theatre.

The great pianist Allen Toussaint will join the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in a rollicking salute to the place where jazz was born, New Orleans, beginning October 27.

Finally, the Jazz Arts Group will open the doors of the Lincoln Theatre for One Night Only, on November 5, for a terrific party – with Yumbambe, MojoFlo, Bobby Floyd and his Trio, and other great guests…it’s our annual fundraiser to assist in the activities of JAG in reaching the community in so many ways.

And, by the way, check out what we have in store for December, January and the rest of the year by visiting our website, www.jazzartsgroup.org.

Excited for the CJO’s Swinging at the Southern season to start! Very impressed by all the great stuff offered by JAG in just the next 30 days. Clearly, it doesn’t matter who you are, what your age, or how much you know about “jazz,” there’s something for everyone. Great work!
